Car Crash Government's midnight skidmarks...

Sky News have blown the BBC out of the water in their coverage of the resignation of James Purnell. An initially particularly heated exchange between Adam Boulton and Peter Kilfoyle MP and a later fierce exchange between Boulton and Shaun Woodward MP epitomises the difference in approach.

Adam Boulton has been utterly brilliant.

ZaNuLiebour MPs are trying to attack Sky for their coverage. Cue the quote of the night, a rebuttal from their anchor: "We're not doing anything, we're not forcing these ministers to resign!"

Away from media coverage, the Labour Party is clearly not a party of Government. This is car crash territory - utter implosion. Tonight, for ZaNuLiebour, truly is the Night of the Living Dead.

Purnell appears at this stage to have no new Cabinet supporters with a flurry of activity just before midnight of ministers rallying to Brown's support in an almost orchestrated fashion.

Purnell is being criticised in strong language by many of his own side.

Tessa Jowell has described as "absolutely wicked" the claims by some Brown loyalists that there is a Blairite plot. Seems the Brownites are still attempting to smear and knife the triple election winner and his supporters. Quelle surprise...

In an unsurprising statement, Conservative leader David Cameron has said:

"In a deep recession and a political crisis we need a strong united Government. Instead we have a Government falling apart in front of our eyes. Britain deserves better than this. With this resignation, the argument for a general election has gone from being strong and powerful to completely unanswerable. For the sake of the country, Gordon Brown must carry out the one final act of authority left open to him, go to the Palace and call the general election we have been demanding."

Meanwhile, Labour HQ is believed to be stating that they will feel lucky to get 20% of the votes cast yesterday.

In the analysis of McBuffoon's problems, some Labour MPs and political pundits are citing the expenses scandal for the anticipated rejection of ZaNuLiebour at the opinion polls. The Talking Clock accepts that there are some who may have voted AGAINST Labour.

However, the politicians and pundits should be more mindful in their observations.

We voted positively FOR the United Kingdom Independence Party.

Please do not insult us by saying that votes for "minor" parties are protest votes. If you believe that is the only possibility for the anticipated results we'll see, then the three main parties will have even bigger problems at the General Election than they already have on their hands...
