Mainstream make Speaker bids secret

One really has to despair. We really wanted to watch the first hustings for the job of The Speaker, courtesy of the Hansard Society. We knew these were taking place in camera from 15:00.

So, we switched on BBC News 24 dutifully. Not on there.

We flicked to BBC Parliament. Not on there.

We flicked to Sky News. Not on there.

BBC1? No.
BBC2? No.
ITV1? No.
Channel Four? No.
Five? You're having a larf aren't ya?

We found these 'in camera' hustings in the end. They were being streamed on a webpage on the BBC's website.

What a triumph for public accessibility to democracy that was! Pah!

(and we still want Ann Widdecombe to win).
