350,000 sign up to preserve status of Wootton Bassett as centre of heroes

Every night, this blogger surfs the websites of the British mainstream press - just to see what's going on. You never get a full picture if you sit passively watching the same news channel or reading one newspaper.

Anyway, we stumbled across a story in the Daily Mail that really drew our attention.

The headline reads: "Backlash over fanatics' march: As 250,000 protest, PM condemns hate preacher's plan for parade in town that honours war dead".

The Daily Mail posted that at 12.53am.

At the time of writing this blog post, 4.20am, that number had risen to 340,280. Every time you hit refresh, that number has gone up by another couple of hundred. Here's the Facebook campaign group concerned.

Now, this is a bit different from a campaign to get Rage Against The Machine to Christmas number one. This is a bit more meaningful.

What really struck this blogger was the anger expressed by LOTS of members of the public in the comments section on the Daily Mail's website.

Anger isn't just the preserve of Daily Mail readers. You should read what they're saying in the Independent's comments section!

This isn't just a few people sounding off about a subject in which their prejudices are invested. This is a huge number of British people who sound very, very angry.

This is a subject upon which this blogger will not express an opinion. We'll let the Daily Mail get on with that. They're bigger than a lone individual blogger.

All we will say is that our opinion is not an obvious one. And that opinion is that this all sounds rather strange indeed. Could anybody really be so stupid?

However, this is a fascinating and huge reaction - to a very strange proposition from a group that seemingly wants to provoke a response - from the British public.

It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out.

Seems though that this must be more curious than appears to the eye. Very, very curious.
