Nut in pants: Obama's anger, our cynicism

A week or so ago, we said we'd reserve judgment on what might or might not be the case with the nutter with explosives allegedly in his pants on a US flight on Christmas Day. Wait and see, we said.

Lo and behold, today Obama has expressed anger at his own spooks who apparently knew enough about the guy to stop him getting on a plane in the first place.

There have also been several alterations in official stories - both here in Blighty and in the US.

This blogger has full confidence in our British spooks. Our spooks are very capable of looking after our nation.

But what we have seen and heard already is a political response to the man in pants - a man who could have been allowed to commit carnage.

Instead of just hanging him from his cahones, it's we the people who will apparently have to suffer.

Since 2001, virtually every aspect of our lives has been impeded upon by our own Governments. Look at the amount of our privacy and freedom they have taken in the name of the 'war on terror'.

And still they can let a man walk around with stuff in his pants.

Now, they want to bring in naked body scanners at airports. We've heard Gordon Brown sabre rattling - and that means that we should brace ourselves for a future raft of erosion of our civil liberties.

But the fact is, our spooks - according to reports - knew about this nut and did their job very well, thank you very much.

In the US, they could have done enough to stop him apparently... but, for whatever reason, they failed.

Our spooks here in Britain don't want, demand, or need this country to be turned into a Stasi-esque police state with no liberties.

Our spooks want and need we the people on side to be their eyes and ears.

Indeed, the ex-head of the spooks said as much in the House of Lords - passionately speaking up in defence of British freedoms and the upholding of a key aspect of the British constitution.

So, maybe Gordon Brown should take heed.

We the people are very cynical about anything and everything politicians say at the moment.

In the civil liberties battle, the apparent errors which let a nutcase almost commit carnage are, at least, 'convenient' to those who would rather place we the people under ever more scrutiny leading into global enslavement.

If we were into conspiracy theories, we might conclude that something very untoward has been going on. In times of cynicism, you can guarantee this blog is not alone is raising an eyebrow.

And the people eroding our freedoms and way of life are not people from caves in the third world wearing underpants filled with dangerous materials.

They are sat in nice plush warm offices wearing suits in the centres of power in nations in the wealthy West.

They should do their jobs properly, act on those who they know are involved in terror (and they must know - they have enough spying-on-the-public apparatus in place)...

Do your jobs properly and leave we, the people, to go about our lives unfettered.
