Wootton Bassett: People power defeats extremist group

As almost three quarters of a million people join the Facebook group set up to counter plans by an extremist group to march through Wootton Bassett, the group concerned - calling itself 'Islam4UK' - has now decided it doesn't have the bottle to go through with it's plan.

Whilst political commentators are declaring the now ditched plan to have been a publicity stunt and the group itself claiming to have achieved it's aims without marching through the town, the impact of people power cannot be dismissed.

Let's face it, nobody - not an extremist and not even any Government authority or agency - is likely to want to have to face three quarters of a million very angry people.

Have a read through the Facebook group. See what people have to say on the matter.

All Islam4UK have done is make British people, of every race and denomination, very angry indeed.

News reports carry quotes from members of the British Muslim communities, appalled at what Islam4UK were proposing and at the anger they were provoking and stirring up.

Quite right too.

Now, thanks to people power, even our spineless Government might act.

Apparently, Alan Johnson is set to ban Islam4UK as soon as tomorrow.

...but not before three quarters of a million people went ballistic.

Spineless.

Those who hate Britain and the British way of life can say whatever they want until three quarters of a million people demonstrate that some views and intentions just are not acceptable.

Meanwhile, the rest of us have to self-censor everything that we might want to say for fear of a knock on the door.

And therein we reach the heart of the problem.

The problem is not Islam. The problem is not the BNP. The problem is this spineless Government and it's tyrannical determination to stop we, the people from thinking for ourselves.

A nation full of people too scared of our own Government to express an opinion. In this instance, three quarters of a million people have clearly had enough of all that.

This country needs change. A real Government and real democracy ('of the people') would be a nice start.
