BBC poll: Brits overwhelmingly reject 'man made global warming' proposition
The poll findings probably tally pretty closely with our own feelings.
When the same survey was last carried out by the same polling company for The Times - November 2009 and upon which the BBC reports variations in opinion - we'd have happily sat on the fence on the issue - with a bit of a bravery in our spine as to dare to look on both sides of that fence.
We can date exactly when we started to smell a rat - 15th October 2009.
We can date it so precisely because we blogged about it on that exact date.
Since then, the revelations about how deep and broad the scam have been breathtaking.
No wonder only 26% of Brits now believe 'man made global warming' is "established" as fact - down from 41% three months ago.
That means three out of four British people do not accept that proposition.
The apparent big swing in public opinion may have a number of reasons - not least variations in individuals who make up the sample. While the same polling company has carried out the latest research as carried it out in November, it does not appear to be a tracking study, following up on the variations of opinion in the same members of the public who took part in the first survey.
Then there are, of course, ClimateGate stories and how those have impacted on public opinion.
A third reason may well be the conduct of politicians. When Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband - amongst others - run around calling members of the public who disagree with them names, then it is no wonder the public turns off from their message. Their 'climate evangelism' and desperate determination to close down debate is repugnant and makes members of the public highly suspicious.
But simplistic analysis is simply this:
With three out of four British people not buying the proposition DESPITE all the hype and propaganda, it would be political suicide to seek to:
- impose huge taxes on the public on the basis of the proposition
- surrender further British sovereignty on the basis of the issue
- divert public funds into a 'Green bank' on the basis of the issue
Now, if the Conservative Party want to lift their poll lead back up into double digits, maybe they need to sit 'Call Me Dave' down in a dark room and explain to him that we're not buying the whole proposition that Labour, Conservative and LibDem politicians all think we ought to.
Meanwhile, those who care passionately about the issue from a 'believer' perspective could look to ban something... Dr. Rajendra Pachauri who, The Telegraph reports, has clocked up half a million air miles and produced 121.1 tonnes of carbon in his pursuit of 'the agenda' in the space of one year alone.
So, ban his flights and tax him into oblivion.
But if Pachauri - climate hypocrite - is considering quitting with the pressure he's under, we'd urge him to stay exactly where he is. We think he's doing a splendid job.
Oh, and what is this? What is the alleged link between the European Empire, deforestation, and biofuels..? The Telegraph has the lowdown on the scam. Errr... story. Climate 'sceptics' and green campaigners can actually unite on the same side over that one...
This blogger would happily extend the hand of friendship to any environmental campaigner - who we would probably disagree with on most things - in order to show our disgust at what is allegedly going on in that story.
