UKIP get onto BBC News channel as Nigel Farage confirms leadership bid

Nigel Farage has confirmed that he WILL stand for re-election as leader of UKIP.

Both he and Gerard Batten have just been interviewed live on the BBC News channel... an interview that, we admit, has required us to rapidly rewrite the post about bias that we were going to write.

Batten has promised that, in his conference speech tomorrow, he will discuss how the EU is turning Britain into a police state. He also says that he will be campaigning for full proportional representation - something that Nigel Farage says is not gong to happen, and that UKIP needs to focus on advancing at a local level.

UKIP are in Torquay for their annual conference. High on the discussion circuit will be that forthcoming election to find a new figure to take the party forward, following the resignation of Lord Pearson. Pearson was elected when Farage resigned to (unsuccessfully) fight the General Election against Speaker John Bercow.

A meeting of the NEC yesterday saw a step back in time with Jeffrey Titford being asked to take on the role of interim leader.

Mr. Titford has already been busy. The Independent online carries a PA report in which he is cited as saying that he believes the party will have it's breakthrough, with the election of a UKIP MP to Westminster.

The BBC has a fairly reasonable conference 'launch' report on their website.

UKIP is the nation's fourth biggest party; garnering 900,000 votes (3%) at the last General Election, while coming second at the last European elections.

Amongst the side stalls and attractions of UKIP's conference is a delegation from the Campaign for an English Parliament.

And, with a hat tip to the elected Chair of UKIP Youth, we believe that the cross-party campaign for an 'In/Out Referendum' alluded to by Tory MEP Daniel Hannan might become a little more public in profile...
