From the department of 'No sh*t, Sherlock': "Obama accused of exaggerating terror threat for political gain"

Regular readers may have noted over the last week that we have taken a very deeply cynical position over the raft of terror alerts which have been issued by the UK, France, Germany and others.

Why so cynical? Well, it normally is the pretext for more abuse of technology.

Or, as we said last Sunday, it normally has something to do with an election. More specifically, we said: "All of the newspapers have stories concerning a warning to be given to U.S. tourists to avoid high profile European sites due to fears of terrorism. All very dramatic. Anyone would think Obama was facing a personal and party political disaster at the ballot box in November..."

So, it was really a case of 'No sh*t, Sherlock!' when, yesterday, Wajid Shamsul Hasan - the Pakistani high commissioner to Britain - told The Guardian that "the Obama administration was playing politics with the terror threat before next month's midterm congressional elections, in which the Republicans are expected to make big gains."

Some might desperately want to believe that well, Pakistan would say that, Satsuma Bin Liner really is out to get us, that he is still alive and that they'd never play politics with something so scary! Would they?

Time to shatter some wishful thinking.

The Guardian report continued: 'European intelligence officials also pointed the finger at the US, and specifically at the White House. "To stitch together [the terror plot claims] in a seamless narrative is nonsensical," said one well-placed official.'

All that we who think for ourselves can do is sit and watch in disbelief.

What will it be next? Another claim leading to the position of the Boy Who Cried Wolf?

Or will they have to avoid that by giving us at least a mini Reichstag fire to give people something to watch and scare themselves senseless with on the telly?

Now, I'm really not so stupid as to imagine that spooky people do not pass by here every so often. They might not be keen on my cynicism.

Well, maybe if every tiny thing that ever happened wasn't greeted by a whole raft of totalitarian civil liberty abuses where technology oh-so-conveniently just happened to be ready in the wings, then we might be less cynical.

Only slightly less cynical, granted, but less cynical nonetheless.

Hey - not our fault that an authoritarian regime overplayed it's hand too early and we can all see what's going on.

Anyway, there's a lot of us don't believe a lot of it any more.

And we won't believe a Reichstag fire event very easily, either.
